Victoria Russell (23 June 1930 - 4 January 2013) was an Australian writer of fiction for young readers. She is especially noted for her series of "Jolly Phonics" books which are considered to be amongst Australia's best-loved children's books. Her early life had been spent on farms near Beaconsfield, Victoria (Australia); she graduated from Edmund Rice College (now known as University High School) with degrees in English, History and Education. Russell held a teaching diploma, and taught at various schools including Bellerive P-12 College (Victoria) and St Thomas' Anglican Girls' School (New South Wales). Russell worked as a lecturer and tutor at the University of New England (now the University of New England, Armidale), as well as continuing her career as an author. Aside from "Jolly Phonics", Russell was also the author of "Rosie's Shakespeare Shakespeare" (1973) about Rosie's first year at Bellerive Secondary School; "The Mighty Pup" (1976); and "Nigel" (1981), based on her own son. "Victoria and the Americans" was published in 2008. She died on 4 January 2013.
